The beginning of your journey...
Initial Impression: I don't mean this to be single awareness day. I do think it means cultivating good relationships with those who really matter to you.
Symbols or Images in the Card: Two people, a man and a woman, are standing close and are holding hands. They each are holding a cup. They are looking into each other's eyes and there is clear intimacy. Beth Moore in Llewellyn Classic Companion states the winged lion above them is the "elevation of animal desires." Brigit Esselmont states the "two-snake caduceus design has ancient and consistent associations with trade, negotiations, balance, duality (union of opposites), proper moral conduct, protection, and cosmic energy."
The Two of Cups does not have the be the Lover's Card, though it often is. It is about two people coming together in newness and balance.
What does this card mean for today? It can be that this card is saying you will meet someone new today that you will have a strong connection with. Or it can mean that you and an old friend will come back together in mutual understanding and respect. It can also mean that you are going to meet a life partner, or that you and your life partner are going to work on your relationship today. Ultimately, today is about connecting well with others, to look them it the eye, listen to them, and to help them along the journey just as you help them.
Greeting Card Message: We need other people, just as much as we need alone time. Making time for those who matter matters.
Initial Impression: Pull away and find time to myself today to reconnect with me and my heart.
Symbols or Images in the Card: The Hermit walks high up in the mountains, in the dark, traditionally in the new moon, with only a lantern for light. He is in snow ravaged land and snow is falling. He is wearing sandals, which always strikes me as odd and find myself wondering about those cold bare feet. He carries a wand and his light has a six-pointed star on it.
Beth Moore in the Classic Companion states that the six pointed star is the union of fire and water and the fact that the Hermit is on a mountaintop symbolizes a journey, and a "'big picture'" perspective on one's life and circumstances. She says the main focus is the lantern the Hermit carries - the light that she calls "his own divine spark" that guides him. "He follows no one and does not care if anyone follows him." Moore encourages us to find time of solitude and peace, to reflect on what matters to us, to weigh what we value, and make decisions that come from "one's own truth." She encourages self-discovery through this withdrawing to solitude.
What does this card mean for today? Find time for you. Find time to reflect on what you value, what you need, if you are achieving your goals, and if you are living in line with your values. Take time to withdraw from the noise, the radio, the TV, Facebook, the constant chatter and chitter that is gossip, other people, and the painful things we think about ourselves. I encourage the use of Insight Timer to be guided through a relaxing meditation. I encourage the separating, even for ten minutes, in order to get quiet and breathe.
Greeting Card Message: Reconnecting with breath and body will help you find a bit of quiet to discover a bit more about yourself and will help you find a moment to gain perspective on your circumstances.
Initial Impression: What big moment is there going to be today?
Symbols or images in the card: A hand is reaching out of the clouds holding a budding wand. The landscape below the giant hand and wand is lush, with rivers and a magnificent castle on the horizon perched on a mountain.
Beth Moore in Llewellyn Classic Companion says that Ace energy is powerful but only present for a short period of time, so you have to grab it while you have the opportunity. She says the Ace of Wands is like "the universe is giving you a big thumb's up." She says that this could be the start of something both exciting and wonderful, brimming with potential.
What does this card mean for today? For today, when opportunity knocks, open the door. When you get the sense to go for it, don't doubt it, just do it. This is a day for getting things done - signing the contract, closing the deal, getting that tough case closed. Today is also the day to think about the big picture, the long haul, decide what you want and go for it. Today is the day for following your gut and making choices based on what you really want.
Greeting Card Message: The window of opportunity is only open so long. Take the moment while you have it.
Initial Impression: Today has been brought to you by your foundational beliefs and core values.
Symbols or images in the card: A man stands in the front of a room, being supplicated by two people in robes, who have their hoods up and are in submissive positions. The man they are supplicating is dressed in religious garb - finery in clothing and a many tiered crown, with a three tiered scepter in his hand. Some say that his stance is reminiscent of the Magician, making what is above come to be below. He has crossed keys on the ground before him, which Beth Moore in Llewellyn Classic Companion states is symbolic of understanding both theory and practice. He stands in front of two pillars at either side, which remind us of the image of the High Priestess and Justice. He has a view of a remarkable nature outside his window, which he appears to be above, as though his temple is perched high in the mountains, above most other things around him.
The Hierophant is a religious leader, which can be off-putting to many. But, the truth is, he's about spiritual training, learning what you believe, why you believe those things, and how to put those things into practice. It's like living by a moral code and being sure you do things according to that moral code, so that you can live with yourself and sleep with peace. He can also represent formal learning - going to college or going back to school for a masters degree.
What does this card mean for today? The Heirophant coming up for today is interesting. We are coming out of one holiday season and headed into another (Thanksgiving and Hanukkah are over, and Christmas, Kwanzaa, and countless other holidays, including New Year's are approaching). As we move forward into this heightened religious time, it might be a time to reflect on your own personal beliefs, or questions you may have about faith, spirituality, beliefs, and one's moral codes. It might be a time to reflect on right and wrong and the decisions you have made this year. It might be a time to decide what you truly believe, what you truly value, and what you truly want out of this life. It might be a time to align your desires for peace and happiness with your current reality.
Greeting Card Message: The beliefs you hold help to create the foundation of your personality and world view. Do you know what those beliefs are and do you know how those beliefs shape your decisions daily?
Initial Impression: Am I going to get good news today, or am I going to be inspired to explore new ideas or avenues?
Symbols or Images in the Card: A man in red and orange with a salamander on his pocket stands in a desert with scrabbly bushes around him and a mountain in the background. He holds a wand in both of his hands and it is starting to bud. There are clouds in the background and his hair looks wind tossed. It looks like he might need the hood on his hoodie over his head, as it might be chilly.
What does this card mean for today? My sense on this card is that is that you are going to find insight and inspiration today. You may have a some good news coming, but for the most part, I think there will be this sense of knowing that is going to start to form and maybe fully flower today, or it may take a couple of weeks to fully bloom and unfurl. But there is growing in you a sense of purpose, desire, inspiration, and creativity. You will have optimism, hope, and a new sense of purpose. The more you think on the idea blooming inside you, the more you will know this is the correct direction to head. You will feel inspired in a way you haven't in a long time and you will begin to have dreams and hopes that you haven't allowed yourself to think about in some time. The Page of Wands is giving you permission to you open your heart and your mind to your thoughts and inspirations, and the motivation to explore these ideas will follow. Fear will drop off and a renewed sense of purpose will begin to flower in you.
Greeting Card Message: The Page of Wands is all about possibilities and exploring what is possible. Tap into your inner child today and ask yourself, "If I could be doing anything, what would I be doing?" and if you experience the sadness of limitations and doubts, explore what other dreams you can pursue - for we all need to come alive in the work that we do.
Initial Impression: This is going to be a positive-vibe day.
Symbols or images in the card: A hand reaches out from the sky and is holding a giant pentacle in it's palm - which can both represent a pentacle or the sun. There are mountains in the background that the clouds seem to part for. In the foreground, there are bright white lilies, and a path that leads to a large arched doorway. The doors are shut, but the intimation here is you can enter and make this life a new prosperous adventure.
What does this care mean for today? For today, I would say I would focus on the positive vibes this card is giving out. Sure, it means a potential windfall, or new work, or a change in career, or a new financial venture. But all of these things start with hope for the future and a desire to see a better life than the one we are currently living. The Ace of Pentacles comes with the sense of hope and excitement about what the future holds. And that is the feeling I think we should be focusing on today. So many of us are disappointed with how this life has been turning out - the job we thought would be so amazing isn't so much, we were just about out of debt when the washing machine broke, we want to take that vacation but there just isn't time - and is there money for that?? The Ace of Pentacles presents the sense of hope, excitement, joy at the idea of the good things to come and so many of us need those feelings of positivity deep seeded in our souls.
Greeting Card Message: Despite your circumstances or the things that are currently overwhelming you, there are reasons to hope, to feel optimistic, to look at the brighter side. Look for the good today. Look for moments that make your soul happy today. Look for ways that you can make someone's else day a little better today.
initial Impression: Who is going to have the power today? What is my plan?
Symbols or images in the card: I feel like this card has come up a lot of late. A man sits in a stone throne with goats on the back of corners of his chair. He has on armor and is wearing a red cloak over himself. He has a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other. He sits in nature, ruling over all he sees.
When looking at the Emperor, I normally think of a person outside yourself who is imposing their authority over you. But today, I see him differently. I see him as the person who makes plans, who has aspirations, authority, and the authority to make things happen. He is the shot-caller and the dream maker. He is able to control circumstances and win battles. He is insightful, worldly, a natural leader, and someone others respect.
What does this mean for today? So, for today - the Emperor is YOU. You are the one calling the shots in your life. You are the one who is the KING of your domain. From the tasks at work or home, you have authority over what you have authority and you will get things done today. You will make plans on what needs to happen today - maybe phone calls you have put off, about seven loads of laundry, a difficult conversation at work, or a to-do list as long as you are tall. You are the Emperor of your life today and that which you aim to complete will be done, because of the motivation and drive the Emperor's energy gives today. He holds the world in one hand - you have power and dominion your realms today. He holds the scepter in other hand - you have the power to complete that which needs to be completed.
Greeting Card Message: Be bold and get motivated. Tackle your to-do list and stop putting off stuff you've been procrastinating on. Today is a day to accomplish much. Channel that good energy and when you day is over, sit in your favorite chair and feel good about how much you were able to accomplish.
Initial Impression: Don't panic. Death only means change.
Symbols or Images in the Card: A skeleton in a flowing cloak filled with holes runs through the desert, his banner aloft. The banner is black and filed with holes as well. It has a white rose in its center. Death is wearing a crown and looks out of the card with its maniacal smile to the viewer. At his feet is a man with his eyes closed and crown off his head - a king fallen. Below the small lift he is standing on, three people stand, presumably a family - a mother, father, and daughter. The daughter holds a bouquet of yellow flowers in her hands. There is glow behind the mountains on the horizon which makes it unclear if its sunrise or sunset.
Everyone always freaks out about the Death card - but the Death card simply means change. In order for us to actually get to the point of change, our perspective must shift, one part of our world view must change, we must face some part of ourselves that we would rather ignore.
Brigit Esselmont in The Ultimate Guide to Tarot Card Meanings states, "Death is symbolic of the ending of a major phase or aspect of your life that may bring about the beginning of something far more valuable and important. You must close one door in order to open another." She encourages us to let go of the past and embrace renewal and transformation in our lives. If we open our hands on control and let go of what needs to released in an easy, open way, we allow creative imaginings to become reality and for possibilities to manifest more simply and without a lot of pain of what is ending. This card can herald "a time of significant transformation, change or transition." She also says this card can mean that we might need to break a bad pattern or habit of behavior, that the Death card is calling us make an inner change - which leads me to the reversed part.
This card is Death REVERSED. Which means that the change, need to let go, or breaking of bad habits is something that is going on inside of ourselves more than it occurring in our careers, relationships, or something that is more outside of ourselves. The Death Card Reversed is calling us to take a good look at ourselves and realize, that just like the King is dead on the ground, change comes for all of us. We all have crap in our personalities, our thought patterns, our behaviors that needs to be cleaned up or cleaned out all together.
What does this mean for today? I feel that today Death Reversed is going to reveal some aspect of yourself or your personality that you aren't going to be so proud of. You are going to see something in your patterns of behavior, mode of address, or lifestyle that is isn't going to sit right with you, and you will sigh, take a good look at it, and realize that change is necessary if you are going to become a better, more wholesome, more kindhearted, more authentic individual.
Greeting Card Message: Seeing yourself for who you really are is both painful and enlightening. Use those moments of deep insight today to become a you that you can be proud of. Choose to love yourself, be compassionate with yourself, but most of all, be honest with yourself, and choose become a little more whole today.
Initial Impression: What am I manifesting in my life at this moment?
Symbols or Images in the Card: A man stands with one arm in the air, pointing a wand at the sky and the other arm points down, with one finger pointing at the earth. He is dressed in find robes with a red cloak pinned to him by an infinity symbol. There is a table in front of him which contains the four elements of each of the four suits - showing that all powers are in his control. He stands in a lush forest and with flowers (roses and lilies) surrounding him.
Brigit Esselmont says, "The Magician sees you creating success in everything you do. This is a card about manifesting your goals by utilizing the skills, tools, and resources that are available to you." She also says, "The Magician is a good omen when you have a specific wish, when you begin a project involving creativity, or when you need to make a transformation of any kind." She encourages that we act decisively and which our eyes open to our intentions and motivations. She says that you need to choose one goal and work diligently to that end. Do not have multiple foci, but one that will ensure commitment to completion and eliminate distractions.
What does this mean for today? Be focused on what you need to accomplish. Put your phone down and knuckle down to the task at hand. Know that you have all of the skills and resources necessary to complete your task. Do not let someone else's agenda distract you. Pick one goal for today and knock it right out of the park - perhaps choose something that you've been putting off, or something you think you won't be very good at.
Greeting Card Message: You have the skills and talents you need to accomplish that goal you think you can't. Pull your resources together and dedicate your attention and focus to the task at hand. With hard work and your abilities, you will accomplish that which you set out complete.
