The beginning of your journey...
Initial Impression: What do I need to learn in order to walk into my full potential?
Symbols or Images in the card: The king is taking time in the evening to read and study by fire and candlelight. He is smiling a genuine smile and is enjoying his time. It could be a work of fiction that he is reading, since he has to be king and cannot run after Quests. In 78 Degrees of Wisdom Rachel Pollack talks about how the King of Cups is a person who has to balance dreams and desires with the calling of daily work. He is a leader. He has to set an example. He cannot set off on the Fool's Journey every time he wants to. He has responsibilities and he needs to lead his people. Pollack also states that the King of Cups needs to keep his strong emotions in check. Barbara Moore in Classic Companion that came with my Llewellyn deck states that if you approach the King of Cups be sure to guard your temper and strong emotions. He does in order to maintain his regal nature, and that is what we all must learn.
Greeting Card Message: Enjoy your adventure. Notice your emotions. Do what you have to do. Jobs are necessary evils. We all must be the King of Cups in our lives and learn how to be responsible and not let our emotions or desires to rule the day.
Initial Impressions: Am I the beggar or am I the giver? Or is it a little of both?
Symbols or images in the card: The King of Pentacles, for the man in this image is the same man in this deck's King of Pentacles card (though he does bare a strong resemblance to the King of Swords and the Emperor - they all look to be of the same family, but my gut is saying this is the King of Pentacles), is benevolently handing a pentacle to a kneeling woman. The kneeling woman has a baby strapped to her back and her arms are outstretched to receive the freely given gift from the king. There is a woman behind the king. She resembles the Empress, but is not the Empress. She holds even scales in her arms, depicted this is an even exchange and this woman is not in debt for having received this gift from the king.
Greeting Card Message: We all have talents. We are all gifted in some areas and weak in others. When we share our gifts with others who might need our strengths, just as we need theirs, it is an even exchange. We give, they give and we meet each other in the middle.
Initial Impression: What am I so focused on that I am missing the burning house on the horizon?
Symbols/Images in the card: A knight is plunging through the darkness, through the night, clearly focused on doing something, or stopping something, but not really doing anything about the house on fire in the background. Because most of the colors in the card are muted grays and purples and blues, our eyes pull to the bright yellow and orange in the background. What are we so focused on today that we miss our houses being on fire? What has pulled our focus so much that we miss an overly obvious situation that could use some focus.
Have you ever seen the basketball game where people with white shirts and people in darker shirts are playing and the assignment is to count how many times they pass the ball to each other? And in the process of staying focused you completely miss the gorilla walking through the basketball game? The gorilla in the basketball game is the house on fire. Because you are not opening your scope of focus, you will completely miss someone's need for a little help and compassion today.
Greeting Card Message: A house on fire is basic human compassion and kindness for each other. Today be sure to shift your focus off your task list and onto each other. We all need a little attention and support.
Initial Impressions: Today is about taking time to love yourself and to treat yourself well.
Symbols/Images in the card: A woman, who is dressed up like she is going out for a lavish evening, is sitting by the side of a well that is filled with pentacles, and has pentacles around the base. She is wearing a jeweled headpiece, a jeweled necklace, and a big ass ring. She holds the pentacle in her lap and the leaves are like an autumn fire around her and the base of the well.
Today, I want you to pay attention to how you are loving yourself and accepting yourself. This woman is confident. She is poised and she knows who she is. She is possesses self-assurance and a sense of her place and her presence in it. I would imagine her self-talk mantra is, "I am intelligent. I have made my present and my future. I might be beautiful, but that is not all there is to me. I am confident about who I am and where I am going." We all could use that kind of confidence in our lives.
Greeting Card Message: Would you let your friends talk to you the way you to talk to yourself? Are you in a good relationship with yourself? Do you show yourself love daily - and what would that look like for you?
Initial Impressions: What is your gut saying? You should listen to that.
Symbols or Images in the card: There is a water passage headed straight toward two towers on both sides of the inlet or the river leading to a bigger body of water, or more straights - it's hard to say what you are headed for. The moon is waning, but you can still see the outline of where the whole thing is - it's there but you can't see it. The water dances with moon glow, which is romantic and beautiful, but the murky depths are below you and you have no idea what is down there.
I want to love the moon card. I want to have it mean change and wonder - but it doesn't. Even when I convince myself it is a good thing, this card is about listening to your gut instincts. It's about paying attention and if someone creeps you out today, get out of there. If you get the sense that someone has plans to harm your character today, pay attention to that. When you're "spidey-senses" are up that something's wonky or not right, that's the moon card. It's your intuition telling you to protect yourself, your character, your "house" if you will. It's the sense to lock the car doors in a shady neighborhood, to check your backseat after you get in the car, to make sure the door is locked and the oven is off when you go to bed. It might seem OCD to some, but really, your gut sense is that something is "off" and you need to make sure you are protecting yourself.
Greeting Card Message: Not everything you feel or worry about makes you paranoid. Sometimes you are right. You should listen to your gut more often. Stop questioning yourself so much and saying, "Oh it will fine." Yeah, it probably will. But with the moon card present - listen to your gut and make sure you are safe.
Initial Impressions: Adventure!
Symbols/Images in the Card: There's a hiker, enjoying a moment to take the in the view. The fact that his eyes are focused on the far away implies there is still more to see of this journey. But, like we all should, he is stopping to enjoy the view, take stock of his accomplishments, and perhaps even rest. I think it's interesting that his pack is light. If I were to be doing this, my pack would be the size of my body. He has only the barest of essentials. Only what he needs.
Greeting Card Message: Have adventures. Have them wherever you are. Maybe intentionally plan an adventure. Or take a look around you today, notice the view, notice what you have accomplished, and enjoy the journey you are on.
The above image is from the Anna K deck. It's got a lot going on in it, making it a complicated card. For another look, Llewellyn Classic tarot uses this for their 3 of Swords - which is a much more straight forward read:
Looking mostly at the Anna K 3 of Swords, but using the Llewellyn classic as a guide here we go.
Initial Impressions: Potential relationship issues today. A sense of cold and foreboding. Perhaps something that has broken your heart in the past, something that has bound your broken heart will be revealed today.
Symbols or Images in the card: The woman in the foreground is not looking so good and she is walking away. There is a dead rose on the ground of the clearly distraught man, and there is warm, big home in the background these people could be in instead of way down the driveway and out in the cold snow. I like to picture that this woman is carrying the three swords - her baggage - you know the expression, "taking her toys and leaving"? She is done, sad and facing the future.
I like the Llewellyn Classic card for the 3 of Swords better. The heart is pierced, but not destroyed. It still holds its shape. It is covered in barbed wire, being trapped and wrapped up by painful memories and experiences. It is surrounded by dead trees and is out in a thunderstorm. Kind of a bleak view. But, the heart still has its shape. There is hope that you will be able to figure out this heartache and heal.
Greeting Card: Whatever is hurting you today, turn, face the issue, and talk to each other. Make time for those you love. Do not walk away from one another, but make an effort to understand one another. Open communication will heal hurt hearts and bring people out of their own aloneness and into deep relationship with one another.
Initial Impressions: Ooh! Yes! How are we going to earthly prosper in the week upcoming?
Symbols/Images in the card: The Queen is in her royal orchard, taking stock of the bounty. She has a barrel of pentacles in the front, two barrels of peaches in the foreground, a barrel of pears in the back, and barrels of berries and plums. She is holding a plum to her nose. She has her hand on her belly, emphasizing the fact that she is pregnant. She too is bountiful! If you are trying for a child, this might be the week to give it a concerted effort! This would also be the week to balance your checkbook and figure out incoming versus outgoing. It would be a week to look for ways to make a little extra side cash, it might be easy to find. This is also the week to think about where you would like to put your resources. Many of us stress about finances; this will be a week where those stresses might let up a little bit. This might also be a week to eat more fruit. It is in season after all. ;)
Greeting Card Message: This is the week to get your financial house in order. There will be more there than you expect. If not, this would be the week to start your side hustle - it's going to be a prosperous endeavor!
Initial Impressions: I called him the Knight of Roses, when I first pulled the card this morning. The other thing I refer to this guy is the Knight of Flowers, which just reeks of Game of Thrones references.
Symbols and Images in the card: In the cups' court cards, many of them are wearing suits of armor and their armor has these dragon scales on them, which I take to mean fierce exteriors and soft underbellies. They are passionate, exuberant, and have loyal hearts. The Knight of Cups loves fiercely and deeply and knows how to woo a woman. What has peaked my interest in this card is the house in the background. It's giant. Modern. Makes me wonder who lives there and if this knight is going to show up with all these flowers for someone in the house. The house is made up of mostly glass windows and we all know the expression about stones and glass houses. Which leads me to say don't be ashamed of your romantic side today. Reach out in love and tenderness. But also, look for those people who may have dragon scales as their opening presentation. They might have been burned in love in the past. They might know how tender and vulnerable their feelings are and so they present with a scaly, unapproachable, and perhaps even intimidating demeanor. It might be that they have a huge heart and romantic ideals, but they are afraid or ashamed to let them out.
Greeting Card Message: Who in your life presents with the gruffest exterior? Does that person need to be shown a bit of love and acceptance? Where you have been hurt the most - are you presenting cantankerously in those areas? What would it look like to be vulnerable with your passions?
Initial impressions: This is going to be a good day!
Symbols or images in the card: A woman in a blue gown is in bright brilliant sunshine and she is surrounded by 10 full cups. Cups is the symbol of emotions. It's the inner life. 10s are the number of completion. So whatever is going on today, it's going to be bring fulfillment, satisfaction, peace, and inner content.
Greeting Card Message: Days like this don't come around too often, so soak in the goodness and delight in the day. Save up these memories for when you need to remember a happy thought.
